On Sunday morning, April 6, 1862, a chance Union patrol collided with General Johnston's army three miles south west of Pittsburg Landing. Savage combat rapidly engulfed the forested plateau and farms surrounding a wilderness church called Shiloh meeting house. A Confederate victory was turned around the following day when General Grant counterattacked and defeated the Confederate forces. Both sides suffered heavy losses with more than 23,000 causalities.
