The first three days of July, 1863 saw the biggest Battle of the Civil War take place in Gettysburg. Robert E. Lee gambled that a major raid into Northern States would hasten the end of the war. The South was defeated. Northern morale skyrocketed while Lee's Army never fully recovered manpower and morale lost before surrendering in 1865.
