Acadia National Park in Maine, the first national park east of the Mississippi, was established with lands donated by citizens who wished to preserve scenic vistas, mountains, woodlands, and ocean shoreline for public enjoyment. Acadia's boundaries now encompass 48,000 acres on Mount Desert Island, Schoodic Peninsula and offshore islands.
