Before the end of the Civil War slavery existed in America's South. The Underground Railroad was neither underground nor a railroad. It was a series of hiding places (or "stations") used by anti-slavery people who helped slaves escape. Runaway slaves were given food, a place to rest and were directed to the next "station" until they reached freedom. This lapel pin reads, "National Underground Railroad, Network to Freedom" and measures 7/8" H x 5/8" W.
