After two years of fierce hostilities, the people of the tattered country were discouraged with the war's progress. Thousands had died, yet the end of the war was not in sight. Robert E. Lee's Confederate forces made their high-water march into Union soil here in Pennsylvania. After more than 20,000 casualties, the crippled Confederate army returned to Virginia, never again able to launch a major offensive.
