Part of the National Park Civil War Series. On April 9, 1865 General Robert E. Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia to Union Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant at the McLean House in Appomattox, Virginia, effectively ending more than four years of bitter, intense fighting which had caused the death of many thousands of men and ripped the young nation apart. Although scattered fighting would continue for a few weeks more, Appomattox Court House has come to symbolize the end of one of the most significant events in American history. Softcover; 56 pages.
