Part of the National Park Civil War Series. The repeated humbling of Union armies that culminated in the defeats of December 1862 deepened Northern war weariness. Thus news of Union General William Rosecrans victory at Stones River was wildly trumpeted and exaggerated in the headlines of the Union press. Pro-war mass meetings were held throughout the Northwest surpassing antiwar gatherings in militancy. None were more grateful for the defeat of Confederate General Braxton Bragg and his troops than beleaguered President Abraham Lincoln who would write to Rosecrans "God bless you, and all with you."
