On April 5, 1856, Booker T. Washington was born an enslaved person on the 207-acre farm of James Burroughs. He described the kitchen cabin where he lived and his mother worked as 14 x 16 feet square. It had only one room with a dirt floor and no glass in the windows. Today, the kitchen cabin is reconstructed at Booker T. Washington National Monument as a part of the monument to his life and legacy.
