Presidential Inaugural Bookmark: President Barack Obama

On November 4, 2008 Barack Obama became the first African-American to be elected President of the United States. Born August 4, 1961 in Hawaii, he is the first President to be born outside of the contiguous 48 states. During Obama's victory speech before a crowd of thousands in Chicago's Grant Park, civil rights leaders who had risked their lives in the 1960's for basic liberties and education opportunities wept with joy that our nation had reached this milestone.
