Part of the National Park Civil War Series. "The Union is Dissolved" screamed the headline of the Charleston Mercury, announcing that South Carolina had passed an ordinance of secession. This would start the dominoes to fall leading to civil war between the North and South. Fort Sumter, situated in the heart of Charleston Harbor, was the starting point of the conflict. It protected the important coastal post and city of Charleston. After constant bombardment, sections of the fort were reduced to rubble. It would take years to reconstruct the fort and many more years to piece the nation back together.
