One hundred fifty years ago, America faced its greatest challenge. Four years of bloody Civil War exacted a terrible toll as it tested the nation's ideals. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians lost their lives in a struggle that destroyed the institution of slavery and restored the United States into one nation. A century and a half later, battlefields echo with the stories of young men caught up in the most costly conflict in our history.
