One hundred fifty years ago, America faced its greatest challenge. Four years of bloody Civil War exacted a terrible toll as it tested the nation's ideals. Hundreds of thoughsand of soldiers and civilians lost their lives in a struggle that that destroyed the instituion of slavery and restpred the United States into one nation. A century and a half later, battlefields echo with the stories of young men caught up in the most costly conflict in our history. Monuments on town squares give testimony to the war's long reach into every community across the land, and more recent debates over civil and states' rights tell us the work started by those in blue and gray continues to shape our lives today.
