On August 17, 1862 four young Dakota men went out to hunt for food, a venture which escalated into the killing of three white men and two women. The following day, a war began between the Dakota Sioux Plains Indians and the US Government in Minnesota. Years of white trespass and settlement on Dakota lands combined with the failure of Indian agents to deliver payments promised by treaty and other violations, created desperation and famine among the Dakota Sioux. The Dakota War of 1862 ended a period of peaceful coexistence between American Indians and white settlers in the Minnesota River region and put in place hostilities and reservation patterns that have persisted to the present day.
