Centered in the filigree border is the Hatteras Lighthouse. Built in the 19th century to protect the sea adventurers it too became threatened by the Atlantic Ocean. In 1999 it was transported inland becoming the tallest brick structure ever moved and still towers above other American lighthouses as an integral part of the Cape Hatteras National Seaboard.
