Andrew Johnson's presidency was marked by dramatic disagreements with the legislative branch, and indeed from within his own administration. After all, he was impeached after trying to fire War Secretary Edwin Stanton. Despite these disagreements, the union endured and in fact expanded: Nebraska was admitted as a state and the Alaska Territory was purchased from Russia.
This colorful embroidered patch depicts Andrew Johnson's burial monument. Set in front of an autumn backdrop of red leaves and a pink sky, the monument is a representation of its inscription: His Faith in the People Never Wavered.
