On July 30, 1864, the Union troops exploded a mine in Burnside’s IX Corps sector beneath Pegram’s Salient, blowing a gap in the Confederate defenses of Petersburg.  As unit after unit of Union attackers charged into and around the crater the Confederates quickly recovered and launched several counterattacks.  The fighting lasted nearly 10 hours and resulted in 5,500 deaths and no break in the Confederate line.

Commemorative Battle of the Crater Magnet measures 2'' in diameter.
