Description

On July 30, 1864, Union troops exploded a mine under the Confederate line attempting to create a breakthrough into the City of Petersburg.  The fighting that followed the explosion raged for nearly 10 hours and resulted in nearly 5,500 causalities and no break in the Confederate line.

General Grant said it was ''the saddest affair I have ever witnessed in the war.''
