On July 30, 1864, Union troops attempted to break the Confederate lines at Petersburg, Virginia by blowing up a mine that had been dug under the Rebel trenches. The explosion created a crater 170 feet long, 60-80 feet wide, and 30 feet deep. However, the poorly planned Yankee attack resulted in an eight month continuation of the siege.
Commemorative Battle of the Crater Lapel Pin measures 1'' in diameter.
