In 1686, Arkansas Post became the first semi-permanent European settlement in the Lower Mississippi River Valley: first under control of the First French Republic, then under Spanish control, then again under control by the French Empire. The United States obtained the region as part of the Louisiana Purchase, but during the Civil War It became a Confederate stronghold.

The flags on this pin represent each of the various countries that claimed ownership over Arkansas Post before finally being returned to American control in 1863, after the Battle of Arkansas Post.
