Hell on the Border, also known as Fort Smith, was awful enough during its heyday that even the US Attorney General called it the ''most miserable prison...in the whole country.'' If a stay at Fort Smith wasn't bad enough, after the federal court moved to a new location in 1890 prisoners had to ride through town in a gallows wagon known as the Black Maria on their way to court.
Although public shame was par for the course in the justice system of the wild west, don't be ashamed of your visit! Recollect your time visiting this historic site with a shiny enameled magnet for your refrigerator, filing cabinet, or other magnetic surface. Take one look at the Black Maria featured on the front and thank your lucky stars that your time at Fort Smith was volutnary!
