Even after the Western District of Arkansas federal court moved to a brand new building in 1890, the jail remained in operation at Forth Smith, thus necessitating the transport of defendants back and forth for hearings. The gallows wagon that was used for this task became known as the Black Maria, and to this day remains an icon of the site.
Some of the prisoners may not want to be reminded of their rides, but you'll certainly want to recall your visit to this Arkansas historic site. Affix this classically embroidered, full color patch to your jacket or bookbag for a fun way to start a conversation with your friends about the legends of the wild, wild west who once rode the Black Maria.
