Located in Andersonville National Cemetery, the tall, granite New York Monument bears two bronze panels. The western panel features the image of two New York prisoners. Above them an angel of compassion offers hope. The angel's olive branch symbolizes peace, and her presence reassures the prisoners of the ''approaching and lasting peace between North and South.''
Dedicated in 1914, the monument portrayed the ''sufferings and fortitude'' of Union prisoners of war.
