The Washington Monument's 40 year journey to completion is an interesting one; first proposed as a tomb proposed 10 days after Washington's death, the monument eventually became the world's tallest obelisk in the world— roughly 4 times taller than any obelisk the Ancient Egyptians ever erected.
The monument's construction was put on hold multiple times during those 40 years because of funding troubles and the American Civil War. Because of the various delays, the monument is constructed from different types of marble. The last kind of marble used was from Cockeysville, near Baltimore.
This miniature sculpture was created using marble from that very same Baltimore quarry! Ground marble is mixed with resin to create this accurate miniature sculpture. This little monument makes the perfect decoration, paperweight, or conversation for your shelf or desk.
Or give it as a gift to the D.C. fan in your life!
