In 1828, construction of an all-water canal route between the Chesapeake Bay and the Ohio River began. The C&O Canal, as it came to be known, took 22 years to complete and terminated in Cumberland, Maryland, only halfway to the Ohio River. After providing economic opportunity for the people living in the Potomac River Valley for over 90 years, the canal closed in 1924. It was made obsolete by the rise of freight rail technology and by damage due to from repeated flooding.
Today, the canal exists as a historic park that provides opportunities for everything from running and hiking, to fishing, and of course, boating.
Commemorate your trip along the C&O Canal, or your appreciation for America's entrepreneurial spirit, with this awesome Porcelain Ornament.
