Teddy Roosevelt used the phrase Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far numerous times before and during his presidency. He often attributed the phrase to a West African proverb he had heard. No evidence of such proverb has ever been found, leading a few historians to believe that Roosevelt was being modest.
The phrase itself means to negotiate peacefully, but always with the ability to back up your words with actions. During Roosevelt's presidency he used this technique multiple times, particularly in Latin America. His Big Stick diplomacy even earned him a Nobel Peace Prize in 1905!
Place this yellow circular magnet on your fridge to keep this proverb fresh in your mind, or as a simple way to celebrate the many achievements of one of our greatest presidents.
