In 1839, while he was president, Martin Van Buren purchased Lindenwald but did not move in until after his presidency in 1841. Lindenwald became the eighth President's home for the remainder of his life. Indeed, the president passed away on Lindenwald's grounds in 1862 at the age of 79.
