During the time of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, mules were used to pull the passing boats through the canal. They were used more often than horses because they could last longer, but, sometimes, they were overworked. Overall, however, the canal’s operations were more efficient for the 97 years it was running thanks to the hard-working mules.
Our C&O Canal Sliding Pin features two mules pulling a boat through the canal. The little image can slide back and forth across the pin, as if the mules are really pulling the boat. Wear our pin as both a commemorative and fun symbol of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal.
