Description

At the site of the South Fork Dam, 10 miles northeast of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, the Johnstown Flood National Memorial tells the story of the first major peacetime calamity in American history.
Despite their best efforts, men at the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club were unable to save the rain-weakened dam from breaking. The dam gave way May 31, 1889, sending 20 million tons of water crashing through the Conemaugh Valley and the city of Johnstown below.

The National Park Service preserves the ruins of the dam as a memorial to the victims and the heroism of Black Friday 1889. This item commemorates the efforts of the people affected by the Johnstown Flood.
