Events associated with the march from Selma to Montgomery, also known as the "Voting Rights March" and from what came to be known as "Bloody Sunday", sent shock waves around the world and raised the nation's consciousness. Through the use of nonviolent protest, ordinary people worked to mobilize and sustain the modern civil rights movement. This movement resulted in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which enfranchised citizens previously denied the right to vote.
