Herbert Hoover believed in the importance of volunteerism and the role of individuals in society and the economy. Dubbed the Great Humanitarian due to his food distribution efforts during WWI, Hoover faced a tremendous challenge eight months into his presidency: the Great Depression. Through building the Hoover Dam and taxing high income brackets, Hoover tried to slow the down-turning economy. Unfortunately, these efforts weren’t enough and the Great Depression lost Hoover his second term as president. After his presidency, Hoover went back to his humanitarian efforts by creating a food distribution program for Germany after WWII and fund raising for the Boys and Girls Club of America.
