With a gift of ornamental cherry trees in 1912, Japan reached out in friendship to the United States of America. First Lady Helen Herron Taft participated in a ceremony planting the first of these trees along the Tidal Basin. The blossoming of the cherry trees marks the return of Spring each year in Washington, D.C. In current times we experience both the beauty of the cherry trees and a touch of Japanese culture during a two week festival. This pin measures 1.25 inches wide and .75 inches tall.
