For over a hundred years in the late 18th and 19th century, Hopewell Furnace produced molten iron to be cast into military munitions or civilian trade goods. While the manufactured goods flowed from Hopewell to the world, a vibrant community developed around the furnace. This community's social structure anticipated modern ideals. Workers employed by the furnace company received equal pay for equal work (no disparities based on race or gender), equal access to basic education and company owned housing, and an unusual awareness of the finite nature of natural resources. This magnet measures approximately 3.25 inches wide and 2.25 inches tall.
